Turkey May Become An Islamist State

Tomorrow's elections for a Turkish president could deliver Turkey into the hands of a party determined, although they claim otherwise, to bring about Islamist rule.

The Washington Post has the story of the Justice and Development Party's rise in Turkish elections and the unrest presented by their desire to have an Islamist government, that is a state run under Islamic, not secular, rule.

Turkey is a member of NATO and has been getting the short end of the stick when it comes to dealing with terrorism from its NATO allies. The United States recognizes the Kurdistan Workers' Party, a Kurdish separatist group based in Iraq, as a terrorist organization but has done nothing to help Turkey deal with them. As a result, hardliners in Turkey are gaining broader appeal as they build up forces on the Turkish border with the occasional incursion.
