The Russian constitution bars presidents from serving more than two consecutive terms in office but does not prevent a president from sitting out a term and then coming back. There is some speculation that Putin may do just that.

Speculation goes further to suggest that Putin may select a successor to fill the presidency for the next four years and may remain involved in the running of the government through his successor until he could resume power in 2012.

That, my friends, it what Russians call democracy.
