The Russian constitution bars presidents from serving more than two consecutive terms in office but does not prevent a president from sitting out a term and then coming back. There is some speculation that Putin may do just that.

Speculation goes further to suggest that Putin may select a successor to fill the presidency for the next four years and may remain involved in the running of the government through his successor until he could resume power in 2012.
